Catherine Wilson was an English high school teacher for over 35 years at Sarnia Collegiate Institute & Technical School (S.C.I.T.S.) located in Sarnia, Ontario. Before her death, she established the Catherine Wilson Foundation in order to make contributions to her school and the community. She selected a previous student and her optometrist to assist her in the management
of the foundation.
Over the years, she supported many local endeavors including scholarships to S.C.I.T.S. students and to the school’s library. Recently S.C.I.T.S. Secondary School amalgamated with St. Clair Secondary School and the new school is named Great Lakes Secondary School.
Recognizing early, that Sarnia-Lambton residents required accessible primary care physicians, she was one of the first financial sponsors in support of the recruitment of doctors to the Sarnia area.
She supported vision care in Sarnia as a result of her own experience with vision issues, specifically, macular degeneration. She has supported in the past the Ivy Institute in London as well as local support of the CNIB.
Catherine was a longtime member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church located in downtown Sarnia. Her foundation has provided St. Andrew’s with much needed capital for the maintenance of this beautiful church.
SCITS
Catherine Wilson was high school English teacher at SCITS for the vast majority of her teaching career. To honour her commitment to academic success, the CW Foundation gives $30,000 per year in scholarships to students of SCITS. The principal and staff at SCITS make the difficult decisions on which students will receive these scholarship funds. As an English teacher, Catherine was always interested in literacy and as a result the CW Foundation has also supported the SCITS library.
